Introduction

SEP has tried to ensure that the practical activities are healthy and safe to use in schools and colleges, both for technicians Preparing materials and pupils and teachers carrying them out. In consultation with the CLEAPSS® School Science Service, SEP has attempted to identify any recognised hazards and suggest appropriate control measures (safety precautions) to reduce the risks from them. It is assumed that practical work will be undertaken in suitable laboratories or work areas and that good laboratory practices will be observed. Teachers should consult their employer’s risk assessments for each activity before use and consider whether any modification is necessary for the particular circumstances of their own schools, classes or rooms. If necessary, CLEAPSS members can obtain further advice by contacting the Helpline on 01895 251496 or e-mail science@cleapss.org.uk.
